Perhaps he most forward thinking of all the mobsters of the 30's  Schultz jumped on the booze and beer wagons early on and made a killing.  He had the foresight to get into and take over the policy racket in much of NY especially Harlem.  He not only owned the policy racket he had his mathematical genius numbers man Otto 'Abba Dabba' Berman dream up a scheme where he paid out as little as he could to as few winners as possible.

He was  also stingy and dressed in everyday man clothes while his contemporaries were fashion plates.

He ran into a couple of real bad court cases and decided he would stop the second and most serious one by having prosecutor Thomas Dewey killed.  The mob did not want this - too high profile a killing.  It was decided that the Dutchman had to go.

So, on the night of October 23, 1935, Schultz and four of his associates, including Otto Berman were shot at the Palace Chop House in Newark, NJ.  Schultz lingered for another day before succumbing to his wounds.

He refused to the end to tell the authorities who had shot him
